Writing in a cafe

I covet the things in the photo: the coffee, the notebook, the cafe table on the Parisian pavement. Ah, the things I could write there…

These books look much-loved. I’ve got spiral books I’ve had since the first days at uni, earnestly scribbled notes, underlined titles, highlighted definitions.

I keep them out of sheer sentimentality, but they’ve been with me for a long time, those old friends.

Their points are so new and fresh, they are like eager puppies, dying to prove what they can do.

I like everything about this photo: the colours, the texture of the paper, the hand-writing. It’s black-and-white, but it’s heart-warming.

This set is by San-x, and it’s adorable.

Wikipedia informs me that  the main character is “a spirit who hates the cold and loves hot dumplings. He’s a faerie who is found at places where the temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius - like tea, hot food and such. He is also called “Hot Head”. He operates in groups, and perspires 10 buckets of sweat per day. He’s not of danger to mankind - although not of much use either.”

I don’t mind, he doesn’t have to be useful. He’s got a whole stationery set for himself; that’s useful in my book.

I’m sure this Monblanc would write just as well if its nib wasn’t so prettily decorated. And yet… there’s nothing like a bit of extra prettiness.

I feel for the author of this picture. If you had this many colour pens, wouldn’t you feel a compulsive need to write something - anything! - with them?

Also: black paper. How cool is that?

Sometimes a simple sprinkling of glitter is enough to turn yet another piece of office stationery into something friendly and tame.

Multicolour pencils

When I was a kid, I adored pencils like these, but I never did learn to use them. To be frank, I have no idea what they’re for.

They’re pretty, though. I’m a shallow stationery-lover, and I’m happy to take form over function most of the time.

Eraser in pencil

The longer I look at this drawing, the more of a cognitive dissonance I experience.

It’s a pencil sketch. Of an eraser. But pencils and erasers are at the opposite ends of a creation cycle: creation v destruction. And yet, this is an eraser. Drawn in pencil.

Ow, my head.

Am I over-analysing?
