Writing in a cafe

I covet the things in the photo: the coffee, the notebook, the cafe table on the Parisian pavement. Ah, the things I could write there…

These books look much-loved. I’ve got spiral books I’ve had since the first days at uni, earnestly scribbled notes, underlined titles, highlighted definitions.

I keep them out of sheer sentimentality, but they’ve been with me for a long time, those old friends.

I feel for the author of this picture. If you had this many colour pens, wouldn’t you feel a compulsive need to write something - anything! - with them?

Also: black paper. How cool is that?

Taking great pictures like this one should be easy, but it isn’t. I couldn’t do it. I’d love to go and photograph my vast collection of pens, pads, pencils, cases and folders, and make them look this tasteful and romantic…

Fine stationery and gold-tipped Monblancs are all very well, but sometimes, a dose of simple cuteness works just as well to satisfy a notepad craving:

Lomo Notebook

At first I intended to post a picture of this book just because it’s cute: the sort of notebook that I may want to own. However, I noticed that the comments on this picture on Flickr all talked about a Lomo Notebook as special, and how other people couldn’t wait to get their hands on one.

A little bit of googling revealed that Lomo Notebooks are meant to jog your creativity: the pages aren’t simply blank, but have messages, questions and hints, which are meant to awaken your creative gland. They are sold over on a page dedicated to them, and there are some instructions about using one, too.

Strangely enough, I’m not tempted at all. Sure, it’s cute, but I don’t like my notebooks to talk to me. I like a blank canvas, or maybe a lined or a graphed canvas - but the only text on a page has to be mine.

To each their own, though, and Lomo books seem to have a loyal following.

I didn’t know how much I was missing in my life until I saw the picture of this spiral pad.

These unbearably cute little books are made by the Japanese company “Mind Wave”, whose kawaii products are apparently all the rage among young girls in Japan. (I swear, just looking at it makes me feel young and carefree.)

I found a few ‘Mind Wave’ notebooks online at ShopKawaii, but not this particular one.

I covet it.

I’m not crafty enough to make my own stationery porn, but I silently covet other people’s skills. Look, this has separate pockets for the main pad, little notepadlet, and a pencil pocket. Aaah.

I can’t keep the secret any more: I am a stationery fetishist.

Are you like me?

You can tell me. I won’t tell anyone.
